Deciding to purchase a playset for your child or children can be an exciting, but nerve-wracking, task. You want your playset to last so your child can enjoy it over time and you also want to include elements and activities that are appropriate for their age group. From ages 5 to 8, children are strengthening their muscles and learning through physical play, so when deciding on the best swing sets for older kids — variety is key!

Just because your kids are older, doesn’t mean that safety is any less important. Many of the safety precautions we recommend for toddlers are also necessary for older children as well. As you research different playset options and view some of the models first-hand, make sure the following safety features are in place:

• Climbing elements should be no taller than 7′ high.
• There should be barriers or guardrails in place for elevated surfaces higher than 2′ from the ground.
• All openings on the equipment should be less than 3 ½” wide or more than 9” wide to avoid trapping body parts.

Between 5 and 8 years old, children can run, jump, skip, and balance with sufficient physical control. It is important to pick a playset that challenges their new abilities. There are several elements to look for when determining the best playsets for older kids.
